Spring is here and that means it’s time to start checking off your checklist of spring cleaning. We know you’re a busy person, and with so many things to get done before the spring is gone and summer is here, your vehicle is probably at the bottom of your list. But this week I am here to tell you that your vehicle maintenance should be a little higher on your list...not being biased. But this week we are dedicating our blog to why it’s so important to change your air filters and the damage you could be causing if you don’t. Why You Should Change Your Air Filters Ahead Of The Spring Season: Your Dirty Filter Is Killing Efficiency Believe it or not, a dirty or clogged air filter is doing major damage to your fuel efficiency. For real. Your mileage could be drastically cut because of a clogged air filter. It can also lead to your heater or air conditioning unit becoming clogged as well since all that dirt and debris need to go somewhere. This can result in hefty repair costs all because you neglected to change your air filter. Pollen’s A Problem When you’re out and about you don’t want to be breathing in allergens and pollen, do you? I didn’t think so. Again, that’s why it is so important to change our your air filter. We recommend changing your filter at the end of pollen season and making sure before that season hits that your filter is clean and hasn’t deteriorated. A broken down air filter will allow dirt, dust, pollen, and other allergens to enter the cabin aka where you breathe. Clean Air = Clear Breathing Spring weather can be a bit wacky. You might end up needing to use your air conditioner one day and the heat the next. Those unpredictable weather changes can put a lot of strain on your air filter which eventually leads to the breakdown of said filter. If your filter has begun to deteriorate, the allergens are just coming straight through your filter and into your vehicle’s cabin. Let’s not worry about that at all. We recommend changing your filter at least every 12,000 to 15,000 miles and checking up on it at the beginning of each new season!

Destination Nissan’s Battery Care Tips: How To Avoid A Dead Battery The easiest way to put your mind to ease that you won’t be in this situation is to service your battery regularly to make sure there are no issues. This is exceptionally important when temperatures start to drop drastically or after driving long miles. A technician can test your battery to ensure that it’s still in a good, healthy condition. Be smart with your vehicle. Don’t use certain features like the radio, chargers, or lights for long periods of time without starting your vehicle. This puts a lot of stress on your battery and can end up killing your battery altogether. Avoid extreme temperatures if you can. We encourage you to park your vehicle in your garage (if you have one). This can cut back on exposure to extreme temperatures and won’t be the mortality of your battery. What Caused My Dead Battery Leaving headlights, interior lights, flashers or the radio on when your vehicle isn’t running. Using the air conditioner or heat when your vehicle isn’t running. Low air temperatures, causing your battery to freeze. Lack of battery maintenance. Not starting your vehicle for long periods of time. Failure of voltage regulator within the alternator. What To Do When Your Battery Dies Of course, the first answer is to jump-start your vehicle. It’s always a great idea to keep a set of jumper cables inside your vehicle for emergencies whether that is you or another driver. Also, keep in mind that you should NEVER try to jump start a battery if it is cracked or visibly leaking acid. Roadside assistance is a beautiful thing and is almost necessary. If you do find yourself stranded and in need of help, be sure to call roadside assistance for help. This is especially helpful if you are on the highway and can’t flag down another driver. Plus, it’s safer to stay in your vehicle while a trained professional addresses the situation.

Battery Power: Making sure your battery is fresh is important. The experts say you should change your battery every 3 years, though you could get away with 5 depending on how much you drive...If you’re thinking to yourself “I can’t remember the last time I changed my battery,” it might be time to do so. Make sure the cables are not loose. With the engine off, see if the cables can slip free from the nodes. Don’t yank, but be firm. Check for corrosion, a white powder that forms around the nodes or clamps of your battery. You can clean this off using baking soda, water, and a toothbrush. Fill your Fluids: It might cost you a little bit more but invest in a “winter blend” type of windshield wiper fluid. These tend to have more alcohol in them and less water so the chance of freezing is less. If your windshield washer fluid tank hasn't been flushed in a few years then it could use it! Be sure not to mix colors; most antifreeze is green, blue, or yellow, but be sure not to mix colors. Checking your vehicle's oil is important. If you have not had an oil change in a long time, it might be time for one. Additional Preventative Measures: Buy an emergency kit with cables, a first aid kit, flares, a battery-powered air compressor, and other things that can prevent a minor inconvenience from becoming a major problem. Check the clarity of all your lights. Keeping the gas tank at half-filled can help prevent a fuel line freeze; so can that fuel-line antifreeze mentioned earlier.
