I don’t know why my friends are like this. They all seem to have absolutely impeccable timing. FOR EXAMPLE, this past Tuesday was moving day for my best friend. That WOULD have been fine, but I don’t know if you remember what the weather was like this past Tuesday. Let me jog your memory. In the immortal words of Olly Williams from Family Guy, IT WAS RAINING SIDEWAYS. Friends, it was so bad that we briefly lost power in Albany. Naturally, I had already agreed to help her move. So we moved her into her apartment, wearing trash bags as raincoats and armed with but one Nissan Rogue, in what can only be described as a monsoon. Good times had by all. To start with, I wasn’t super optimistic about our situation. Don’t get me wrong, the Nissan Rogue is an AWESOME car, it’s got all kinds of cool technology, heated seats and plenty of room for my long legs. But...she had a LOT of boxes and I just looked at that back seat and couldn’t see how it would be possible to fit it all. As it turns out the Nissan Rogue has split-folding 2nd-row seating which gave us a lot more space to fit everything. And I mean everything. There was enough room for her 8-foot long mirror in there. That’s NUTS. This moving adventure very quickly turned into high stakes Tetris and more and more of her things became waterlogged as we brought them out to the car. Fortunately, we got everything into the car and as we went back to the house to finish locking everything up, she was able to start the car remotely! (Perks of going with the SV trim level!) The car was packed to the ABSOLUTE brim and seeing out the back of the car was but a distant dream. The rain had only gotten more intense so we were struggling to see out the front of the Rogue, much less see out the back or in our blind spots. Fortunately for Sarah, the VS also included Blind spot warning and auto headlights so we were able to get to the new house safely. Once there we unpacked as quickly as was humanly possible. I was amazed that we were actually able to do it, but we did. I’m not gonna lie, that Nissan Rogue really came in clutch when we needed it. As soon as we brought in the last box, as our luck would dictate, the rain stopped and the sun came out...almost mocking us. We should have known that the second we didn’t need to do anything, THAT is when the sun would decide to come out. Figures. Whatever, despite the weather, this moving experience was actually mostly sunshine and rainbows...metaphorically of course, but you know what I mean. The sun goes down earlier and there is less daylight so if a bulb is out, fix it before winter starts. If your headlights are foggy or yellow, consider replacing them or look into an easy restoration kit. Battery Have a volt test performed on your battery before winter starts to make sure it's still in good working order. Cold weather means your car battery has to work that much harder just to get going. So, if it isn’t in working order, buy a new battery as soon as possible so you'll never have to worry about being stranded or left in a cold parking lot with a car that won't start. Coolant Make sure your car isn't low on coolant and that there aren't any leaks in your vehicle's engine that could cause coolant to drain out. Many mechanics recommend drivers use a 50/50-mix of coolant and water in their radiators, which usually results in a lower engine freezing point than just coolant. Tires/ Tire Pressure All-Weather Tires are great, but Winter tires are more capable of staying flexible at low temperatures. In addition, make sure to check your tire pressure and tread regularly to ensure that your vehicle stands the best chance of staying safe out in slick weather. Defroster and Climate Control The climate control system will help keep you warm in the winter (and can help keep your windows from fogging up), while the defroster will keep your windows from icing up. My dog is decidedly my best friend. Nana is an overgrown St. Bernard and she is the love of my life. We do everything together. I mean everything. She loves going for rides in my Nissan Rogue Sport, especially now that we’ve gotten through our good puppy car training. She is calm, cool, and collected and doesn’t assume every drive is a trip to the vet! It’s a blessing. Today I discovered that Nissan has a Nissan Rogue one-off concept vehicle that is currently being tested in Europe called the Nissan Rogue X-Trail 4Dogs! Basically, it transforms your Nissan Rogue into a portable puppy sanctuary! This awesome concept features a bed, no-spill water bowl, and treat dispenser for pooches who love a little snack. With the slide-out ramp, your pooch can get in and out of the cargo bay, and hooked up to the clip-on harness to keep them safe while the vehicle is moving. If you have a particularly muddy adventure hiking up the trails the fall, an integrated shower and dryer keep your pup and the car clean and fresh for each ride. The leather upholstery was made to be easily cleaned and removed, so even if an accident happens the area is easy to clean out. The best part of this concept is that there is “dog-cam technology.” Basically, it’s like you and your pup are on FaceTime while you drive so you can keep an eye on your pup through the 7-inch dashboard display and they can see you by way of a 10-inch LCD screen in the cargo area of the vehicle. I know that Nana and I would REALLY love to try this vehicle out for ourselves, but unfortunately, as of right now, it’s just a concept. It's one of those decisions you regret, like that spur-of-the-moment tattoo or the piercing you got on a dare. Maybe you threw a bumper sticker on your vehicle because you were obsessed with that band at the time, or maybe a friend slapped it on as a joke. Scrub-a-Dub-Dub Before doing anything, you need to clean the area around the bumper sticker or decal. Dry thoroughly before proceeding. Warm Things Up The warmer the bumper sticker, the easier it will be to take off, which makes summer the perfect time to remove them. For some help, run a blow dryer over the sticker to heat it up even more. Do You Even Lift? Once the sticker or decal is warmed up, lift the edge of the sticker using a credit card or a plastic spatula. Use something that won't scratch the paint. Do the Deed Finally, grab the lifted edge of the sticker and gently pull it away from the bumper. Use a single smooth motion to avoid tearing it. I don’t know if you have to travel down 787 as often as I do, but it feels like during the summer months and into the fall, 787 is in a constant state of being under construction. This typically means that there will be a lot of traffic, and many angry people driving even more aggressively than they would have otherwise. Unfortunately, these construction sites bear the brunt of our traffic based anger and it creates an unsafe work environment and an unsafe driving environment for those of us on the road. This is why there is a distinct need to go over some construction zone safety tips to keep those working in the sites and those of us driving through the sites safe and sound. Safety professionals recommend several precautions to help make construction zones safer for everyone: When approaching a construction/maintenance situation exercise caution and slow down. Observe warning and caution signs before entering a construction zone. Observe these posted signs until you see the one that says you've left the work zone. Turn on your lights to make your vehicle more visible. Expecting the unexpected is a golden rule when traveling through construction zones. Avoid abrupt driving maneuvers. Always be aware that vehicles ahead of you may stop unexpectedly. Maintain a safe following distance. Rear-end collisions are one of the most common types of construction zone accidents. Drivers should slow to the posted speed and move to the proper lane as instructed. Traffic and road conditions may dictate an even slower speed. Keep -up with the traffic flow. Obey road crew flaggers! Drivers should not wait until the last minute to merge to the correct lane. Use correct merging techniques when changing lanes – use your indicators. Narrow lanes and restricted shoulders make construction zones a common place for lane-change accidents. Regular traffic lanes are often shifted to temporary lanes and shoulders that may not provide the stability regular traffic lanes offer. Stay alert for aggressive drivers. If another motorist is aggressively jockeying for position, drivers should let them move on. Challenging another driver encourages road rage and endangers the safety of other motorists and workers in the area. Avoid distracting activities. Remaining alert for unexpected hazards is critical when traveling through construction zones. Talking on a cell phone, tuning the radio, eating, reading, or other similarly distracting activities can quickly lead to an accident. Watch for construction equipment and workers. Construction equipment entering and exiting a work zone without warning, equipment extending into traffic, and construction crews and flaggers working dangerously close to moving traffic are a few of the hazards to expect. Stay alert for obstacles and debris. Construction equipment, signs, and barriers may be located close to the edge of the roadway. Debris from work projects, especially dust, dirt, and gravel, may cause added disruption. Be patient, cautious, and courteous.
