During the summer months, vacationers are at an all-time high throughout the country. As you plan for an upcoming road trip, check out tips to save money.

1. Use GasBuddy

The GasBuddy app is helpful on road trips because it allows you to look up fuel costs at specific stations around you. This helps you know if you should fill up before the gauge drops too low since stations up ahead might be significantly more expensive.

2. Plan Ahead

Start researching hotels and/or attraction tickets long before you pack your bags. Some hotels offer deep discounts in advance, while others drop prices just before the dates arrive in an attempt to fill open rooms. Many attractions offer discounted tickets to buyers who purchase online instead of buying tickets at the gate. Another important tip is to have your vehicle serviced before you go. Simple maintenance tasks such as spark plug replacements and oil changes can be beneficial for extended road trips.

3. Pack Snacks

When you pack your suitcases, be sure to include plenty of snacks and drinks. A single 20-ounce soda at a convenience store can cost as much as a six-pack in a grocery store. The same goes for small bags of chips and candy. If you are traveling with a crowd, shop at bulk stores and portion out snacks in smaller containers.

A road trip is a fun way to see different places around the U.S. without breaking the bank.
