Have you ever been driving down the road and all of a sudden start smelling something a little funky? If not, you’re lucky! But if you have, you know that some things that smell a little funky can mean bad things for your vehicle. This week, we are bringing you five smells that you should NEVER ignore and what they could mean. So, without further ado, let’s get started on those smells!

You Smell: Rotten eggs
What It Is: This could mean that your catalytic converter is having issues. And hydrogen sulfide could be making its way into your exhaust. This could simply be a fuel injection issue, or your cat is failing. Unfortunately, this could end up being a pretty expensive repair and lastly, if you smell the rotten eggs when your vehicle is turned off, that funky smell could just be some old food stuck under your seat or an old gym bag!

You Smell: Hot oil
What It Is: The easiest smell of all to diagnose is hot oil. This happens when oil leaks onto your exhaust manifold which is hot due to your engine running. This smell is not pleasant so you’ll probably notice it right away! Take a look around your engine and vehicle to look for leaks. Also, keep an eye out for any smoke. If you can find the leak, try to stem it, then bring your car to the shop as soon as possible.

You Smell: Sulfur
What It Is: When you smell sulfur in your car, it’s safe to assume that it is gear lubricant leaking from either the manual transmission, transfer case, or differential housing. Sulfur compounds in the oil are used as extreme pressure lubricants for gears and after being in use for a while, these substances can get smelly and gross. Check for those oily puddles under your vehicle and if you notice any, bring your ride in for a check-up!

You Smell: Maple syrup
What It Is: While this one might sound delicious, it’s most definitely toxic! The coolant has ethylene glycol in it, which makes this smell a bit concerning. If you’re smell maple syrup, that means there’s a leak somewhere and you’ll want to stop in for our technicians to take a look! This can be a simple fix but it’s best to have a certified technician treat this. You Smell: A gas station
What It Is: If you’re not sitting next to a gas station, this is an issue. If your car is on the older side (i.e. before 1980) then you could be smelling gas when you turn your vehicle off and have no issue. But, if your vehicle is newer, the smell of gasoline could mean a leak from your fuel injection line or fuel tank vent hose. Either way, it’s best to play this safe and stop in to see our team for a service check-up.

As summer rolls in, gas prices are going up. It’s normal, more people are hitting the road for summer getaways, and that means the gas prices go up. We understand it is annoying, but there are a couple of things you can do to help save big on the gas bill. No, there is no magic place where you can get gas for super cheap, but we do have some tips to help you drive more aware which can help you save big! Many of us don’t realize that the way we drive our vehicles can burn more gas, so this week’s blog is dedicated to helping you keep that money in your wallet for things you really want. So check out our tips below and if you have any questions feel free to give us a call or stop in!

Track Your Mileage In Real-Time

  • Knowing what mileage you’re getting in real-time compared to what you got yesterday or even 10 minutes ago is the new way to drive
  • Most newer vehicles have this function and allow you to view it on your virtual cockpit
  • For older cars, you may need to get your knuckles dirty by installing a vacuum gauge, which measures how hard the engine is working, or explore the growing world of DIY fuel-economy electronics

Only Brake When Needed

  • You might find that in traffic, not even stop-and-go traffic, that the pack was constantly speeding up and abruptly slowing down
  • Do something different, when everyone starts going give yourself a 10-15 seconds buffer before hitting the gas and accelerating. If timed right you could coast right up to the vehicle in front of you as they are starting again without ever hitting the brakes.

Drive Like You’re On a Bike

  • When you’re headed uphill, it takes a lot more effort to maintain speed than it does going down, so give the car a break and let yourself lose a few mph on the way up.  Your car burns the most gas when it’s forced into high-load situations, so try to remember what makes biking difficult and make those situations as painless as possible by laying off the gas.

Plan Your Route Ahead Of Time

  • Take the path with fewer stoplights, not as much traffic, and, yes, lower speed limits. Even if you save 0.1 gallons of gas each day, you’ll save more than a hundred dollars per year.

Avoid Rush Hour

  • I get it, avoiding rush hour is a lot harder said than done. Most office buildings let out around the same hours and you can’t just sit there till the roads are clear. Well, try alternate routes. It might add a few minutes to your commute but will save you more gas than having to deal with stop-and-go traffic!

Summer is finally here and that means there is no better time than now to hit the road with the family and soak up the sun wherever your adventure takes you. Family road trips can be really fun; checking out famous landmarks, site seeing, and just enjoying good times with the family. But if you have little ones, you know that a fun road trip can easily be turned upside down when they ask every ten minutes “are we there yet?” So to avoid you pulling your hair out, this week we are bringing you some fun activities for your little bundle of joy to help combat their boredom. Take a few minutes to check out our list below and feel free to add any fun ideas your family might do! We also suggest you planning ahead and scheduling out when to do each activity so that you don’t run out too quickly.

If your vehicle is in need of service before hitting the road, the professionals at Destination Nissan would be happy to help get your ride road trip ready! On the other hand, if you think it’s time to say goodbye to your old ride and hello to a brand new Nissan, browse our available inventory or stop into Destination Nissan today!

  • Combat boredom by making your own “travel binder.” Fill it with coloring pages, word searches, bingo games, etc, that way the kids will be entertained with a handful of different activities.

  • Another way to fight boredom is technology, whether it be a learning toy, an iPad to watch movies or play games, an iPod to listen to music, or even an audible book!

  • Bring lots of snacks! Kids get hungry when they get bored which can easily turn into them becoming hangry/cranky. That’s the last thing you want to deal with on a long trip, so pack a good mix of healthy snacks and a couple of their favorite treats for when they get really antsy!

  • Another fun activity is having a countdown. Kids love countdowns of any kind, so turn it into a game! Give them a time limit and an activity, remind them of how much time they have left, and watched them focus on finishing in time! This is perfect because it keeps them entertained, it lets them know how much longer till we are there, and it keeps your drive easy!

  • For when all else fails to prepare a “Are we there yet bag? When you’re coming up on a near breakdown pull out the bag and tell them if they behave they get to pick a prize out of it! This will easily buy you another half hour and keep your children excited and entertained with what they might get next

Summer is right around the corner, and there is no better time to upgrade to a new Nissan than right now! The best part? The market is currently facing a shortage of vehicles, which means pre-owned vehicles are in high demand right now. What does this mean for you? Well, it means that your current used vehicle could be worth more today than it was yesterday! Plus, Destination Nissan is looking to build our current pre-owned inventory and we’re offering cash* your current ride – even if you don’t buy from us! So, if you’ve been dreaming about a new Nissan for your summer road trips, Destination Nissan is the place to be! So value your trade and get your Kelley Blue Book Instant Cash Offer now and hurry in to claim your reward! Or talk to a team member to learn more about how to sell your pre-owned vehicle at Destination Nissan!

Thinking about selling your pre-owned vehicle privately? The choice is yours, but below you will find a list of benefits of selling with a dealership like Destination Nissan. So take a peek, see which option works best, and give us a call if you want to learn more about selling your current vehicle to Destination Nissan – even if you’re not planning on buying from us!

Save Time/ Get Cash Fast

  • Selling your car to a dealer is the fastest way to get paid. When you take your pre-owned car to a dealership, you can be in and out of the door within a few hours. However, when you sell privately, it could take weeks or even months.
  • Dealerships love buying and adding pre-owned vehicles to their lots because, according to Cox Automotive 2018 Used Car Market Report, about 70% of annual vehicle sales are used cars.

Convenience

  • Selling your vehicle privately can be a hassle. It involves advertising the car, detailing it, arranging times for potential buyers to test-drive the car. You must also do all the bargaining, and there’s always the risk that the buyer will back out at any time.
  • When you sell to a dealership you’ll drive into your dealership, make the sale, and go home—how much easier can it get?

It’s Simple

  •  Paperwork is a headache – so leave it to the dealership! Dealers will handle all the paperwork for you and the DMV, so you won’t have to worry about anything other than the price and signing your name. With a third party or private buyer, you’ll have to deal with all title transfers and bill of sales.

Save Money With Potential Tax Breaks

  • In most cases*, when you sell your vehicle to the dealership and buy from them at the same time (trade-in), you’ll save money on the sales tax of your new car.
  • For instance, if you trade in a car for $5,000 and purchase a new vehicle for $20,000, you may only have to pay taxes on $15,000. Tax credits may also be available for select new vehicles, including hybrids and electric cars.
