The season of road trips is upon us and if you have one or two planned for the near future it is a good idea to get your vehicle into tip-top shape if you have not done so. When people hear that it’s time to get your vehicle road-trip ready they tend to think about servicing their vehicle, which is very important and something you should do before packing it all in hitting the road. However, there are a lot of things you should be doing that aren’t service-related.

In fact, giving some TLC to your Nissan interior is just as important. On a road trip, you’ll be spending a lot of time in the car, making sure that you are prepared and have everything you need is important to both your safety and sanity. Below we have listed out some important things to remember to do and bring along to make your trip go as smoothly as possible, as well as have you prepared even if you hit a bump or two along the way.

Before Hitting The Road Be Sure To Check…

  • Top off fluid levels
  • Change air filters
  • Detail and clean out vehicle
  • Place small garbage bags throughout your vehicle to keep control of the mess
  • Change spark plugs
  • Check the tire pressure for both the spare tire and the ones on the vehicle
  • Make sure you have a tire iron and jack in case of a popped tire
  • Bring towels for cleaning dirty windows, spills, etc.
  • Bring a spare key in case you lock your keys in the car
  • Make sure your owner’s manual is in the vehicle
  • Emergency kit/first aid kit

However, if you haven’t tuned up your Nissan for spring, we suggest scheduling a service appointment without a team before you hit the road. Our team of professionals can get your ride in, out, and on the road in no time. Head over to our website now to schedule your Nissan service appointment, and check out our service specials to save big!

Many of us are happy to say goodbye to winter because that means that the warm weather is coming, aka no more snow! But just because we might not see any more snow doesn’t mean that driving in spring is any safer than driving in winter. I know many of you might be scratching your head questioning how that might be. Well, during the spring a lot more people are out and about, including walkers, children, motorists, and bikers. Making sure you stay attentive at all times is extremely important during the spring/summer months. Weather-wise, conditions can become slippery during the spring months due to all of the rain that we get. With many many things to remember and keep an eye out for, we thought it would be a good idea to list them out and remind you what you should be checking for. So get yourself prepared to start driving in spring conditions again with our helpful tips below!

Be On The Lookout For Potholes: Winter weather takes a big toll on our roadways, which leads to some pretty nasty potholes. If you’re speeding down the road and don’t slow down in time and hit a pothole, then chances are that your vehicle is gonna have some serious damage. Damage can include a punctured tire, bent rim, suspension damage, poor alignment, and exhaust system damage.

Slow Down For Spring Showers: Did you know that roads are most slippery when it first starts to rain? This is caused by rainwater mixing with contaminants on the road, such as oil and grease. Make sure to increase your following distance to allow for proper braking.

Watch For Animals On The Move: Animal activity is up when the weather starts getting nicer. That means keep an eye out and drive slow especially for animals like deer that are known to be out at dusk and dawn.

Watch For Pedestrians: Similar to animals, people tend to be out and about more when the weather starts getting warmer. Whether that means there are more walkers, cyclists or kids play hopscotch. Be sure to slow down especially in residential neighborhoods and busy streets.

Share The Road With Motorcycles: Spring is when the motorcycle riders come out, and because of their speed and size, they may come in and out of your blind spots quickly. Be sure to listen to the sound of their bike and take a few extra seconds before switching lanes. If you are following a motorcycle, remember to leave a good amount of space in between.

Maintain Proper Tire Pressure: During the winter months, your tires lose air due to the cold temperatures, this causes your tire to be under-deflated. Vice-versa, warm weather will cause them to be over-inflated. Each situation can lead to increased wear and poor handling.

Inspect Your Tires: Spring will bring the showers and when that happens making sure your tire tread is in shape is important to the quality of your driving. Just like snow, rain makes the road slippery, and having good tires will make or break your driving experience. Remember to use easy tricks like the penny test to check your tire tread and regularly check your tire pressure if your vehicle doesn’t display it for you.

Pay Attention In Construction Zones: When the snow washes away and the spring days are here to stay, construction will start up again. One thing to keep in mind is that construction zones ask you to slow down for a reason, do it. Remember to…

  • Be attentive. Construction workers and equipment may suddenly enter the roadway. Traffic patterns can change daily to accommodate the work being done.
  • Understand and follow the signs.
  • Make safe lane changes. Solid lines in construction zones mean that you should stay in your lane.
  • Slow down. Fines may be doubled in construction zones. In addition, slowing down can save a life.

Car Care Tips For Spring:

  • Check those fluid levels, all of them! From engine oil, power steering, brake, and transmission fluids…oh and don’t forget the windshield wiper fluid and antifreeze/coolant!
  • Take a peek at your hoses and belts to make use they haven’t been cracked due to cold weather and wear and tear.
  • Check your battery to make sure the connection is clean, tight, and corrosion-free.
  • Make sure to get your ride an oil change and have the brake linings, rotors, and drums inspected.
  • Often overlooked, but important; be sure to check your exhaust system for leaks and damaged or broken supports or hangers if there is an unusual noise.
  • Tune it up with a tune-up to help the engine deliver the best balance of power and fuel economy
  • Check the heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, as proper heating and cooling performance is critical for safety reasons and interior comfort in the spring/summer months
  •  Inspect the steering and suspension system
  • Check your tire pressure and tread depth to see if it’s time for a new set. Also keep an eye out for uneven tread wear, which indicates that your vehicle needs a wheel alignment.
  •  Check the wipers and lighting so that you can see and be seen

Give Your Vehicle A Good Wash

  • Winter can be tough on your vehicle’s exterior. Freezing temperatures and salt from the road can do real damage to your paint job, so make sure to start the season with a car wash.
  • If you choose to go to a car wash, go for the premium wash to get all the nooks and crannies and a deep clean after months of harsh road conditions.
  •  If you do it yourself, make sure to add baking soda to the wash water if your car has a strong salt buildup. This will help neutralize the salt and save your paint job.

Tire Check

  • When it looks like the snow is finally done falling, be sure to switch from your snow tires to your all-season tires.
  • Once you have your tires back on, be sure to grab your owners manual to find the Manufacturer recommended air pressure. Not only is this important for alignment, but also can give you better gas mileage and save your money at the tank!
  • Make sure your tires are rotated regularly and don’t wait until you have a visible flat to fill them up.
  • Check your tires for worn tread and make sure to replace your tires when the tread becomes too worn. If you’re not sure if you need new tires, use the penny test to determine!

Battery Check

  • After a long brutal winter, you’re going to want to check your battery’s life.
  • Stop by the dealership for a battery test to see the life of your car’s battery. If your battery is getting weak, you can prevent future problems by replacing it before it stops working.
  • If you find you’re in need of a new battery, be sure to check out our service offers page to see if you can take advantage of any battery offers!

Replace Wiper Blades and Fluids

  • Snow, sleet, and ice can cause wear on your windshield wipers – and it’s no secret how dirty your windows get with slush getting kicked up at you on the road. This means spring is the perfect time to get new wiper blades and top off your windshield wiper fluid levels for all the spring rain coming your way very soon.
  • New wiper blades are inexpensive and simple to replace, so you won’t even need to pay someone to do it for you. However, our team of experts is always here to help you if needed!

Oil Change

  • Your vehicle works hard to get you where you need to go, especially during the winter months. That’s why spring is the perfect time to give your care the TLC/pick-me-up your vehicle needs.
  • Regular oil changes can make all the difference in making sure your car has a long, healthy life.
  • Whether your vehicle needs a regular oil change or synthetic oil change, our team is here to assist you!
  • Be sure to check out our service offers page to see what offers are available to you!
  • If you will be performing the oil change on your own, be sure to follow the manufacturer’s suggestions for oil change intervals and oil viscosity, and make sure to change the oil filter as well.

Another snow day in Albany, NY means right now is the perfect time for us to share our helpful winter driving tips! We know living in Upstate New York means that you’re no stranger to snowy winters. However, that doesn’t mean you like driving in the snow or are any good at it. Lucky for you, your friends here at Destination Nissan are here to help get you from point A to point B safely! We have tons of winter driving tips and tricks below! Take a peek below and give yourself a refresher on the best practices for driving in the snow! We do want to urge all of our guests to stay home and avoid travel if possible. So, if you were planning on stopping in to shop today, we invite you to shop online and schedule a test for your next convenient date!

Tips For Driving In The Snow:

  • Accelerate and decelerate slowly. Applying the gas slowly to accelerate is the best method for gaining traction and avoiding skids.
  • Drive slowly. Everything takes longer on snow-covered roads. Accelerating, stopping, turning – nothing happens as quickly as on dry pavement. Give yourself time to maneuver by driving slowly.
  • The normal dry pavement following distance of three to four seconds should be increased to eight to ten seconds
  • Know your brakes. Whether you have antilock brakes or not, the best way to stop is threshold braking.
  • Don’t stop if you can avoid it.
  • Don’t stop going up a hill. There’s nothing worse than trying to get moving up a hill on an icy road.
  • Make it know what kind of driving assistance you have (AAA, Roadside Assistance, etc.)

Everyday Driving Tips:

  • Avoid driving while you’re fatigued.
  • Never warm up a vehicle in an enclosed area, such as a garage.
  • Make certain your tires are properly inflated.
  • Keep your gas tank at least half full to avoid gas line freeze-up.
  • If possible, avoid using your parking brake in cold, rainy, and snowy weather.
  • Do not use cruise control when driving on any slippery surface (wet, ice, sand).
  • Always look and steer where you want to go.
  • Use your seat belt every time you get into your vehicle.

Long-Distance Driving Tips:

  • Watch Weather Reports
  • Service your vehicle before hitting the road
  • Keep at least half a tank at all times
  • If you become snow-bound, stay with your vehicle. It provides temporary shelter and makes it easier for rescuers to locate you.
  • Tie a brightly colored cloth to the antenna or place a cloth at the top of a rolled-up window to signal distress, if needed.
  • Make sure the exhaust pipe isn’t clogged with snow, ice, or mud if you slide off the road
