There is a big difference between leasing a new vehicle and buying one, and there is no right or wrong choice, it’s just a fact that some people are leasing people and some people are buying people. I know you’re thinking okay well which one am I? Well Don’t stress I’ve done the hard work and I found a handful of examples of individual traits for “leasing people.” If you find that you fit a lot of them, you might want to look into leasing your next vehicle! You like driving a new vehicle every 3 or 4 years: Some people love driving a brand new car every few years If you know you’ll be getting a new car in a few years, leasing could be the ideal choice You’re a low mileage driver: If you drive between 10,000 and 15,000 miles per year, a lease is the right fit for you. Chances are if you’re a car owner you have pumped your own gas before unless you’re super rich and have your own personal butler, so if that is the case please refer your butler to this blog, please and thank you! Anyway, we have all been at the pump before and if you’re like most of us you probably always hit the “Regular” choice in gas aka my favorite because it’s the cheapest! But have you ever stopped to think hmm “who actually chooses the other two options?” or even “what is the difference between all of them?” I sure did when I called my mom crying because I accidentally put in the most expensive choice and then thought my car was going to blow up if I turned on the ignition...so yeah, I guess we should know the difference right? Or at least so you don’t end up calling your mom crying… Don’t worry the worst part of the whole situation was that I ended up paying way more than usual *CRIES*! What’s the difference? The price! It is pretty obvious that the “premium” fuel would be more expensive right? Well, if you said yes you guessed right. Premium fuel runs about 20 cents higher than regular fuel. Premium fuel also comes with a higher octane level—92 or 93 compared to 87 for regular gas. Fun fact that’s what those numbers mean on each choice of gas! Octane is how much compression a fuel can withstand before igniting. A higher octane gas won’t pre-ignite or explode as quickly. Why the right fuel matters? Every car is designed differently and every car is designed to run best with a specific type of fuel. If you’re unsure which type of fuel you should be putting in your car check your owners manual! For the drivers who have been filling up your car with premium fuel, you may be tempted to put in regular fuel to save yourself some money. The issue with that is if you use a lower recommended level of fuel, the gas may combust too fast in your engine. That can cause the engine to make knocking noises, reducing your car’s power and fuel economy, and cause potentially cause engine damage. When it comes to the opposite, using higher octane fuel when you usually use regular, the risk is lower. If you use regular gas and switch to premium gas there are not any extra benefits to your engine life. So in my personal opinion, I would recommend saving your money! So, I am planning a road trip with my boyfriend this summer, and I asked my mom what I should bring along in the car. Disclaimer: my mom is SO organized - she has lists of her lists, basically, and she’s always on top of things. It’s kind of scary, honestly. She and I used to drive down South every summer, and so she has tons of experience in the car-packing area. I thought this list was great, and I wanted to share it with everyone! Snacks!!! Cooler with drinks/food (so much cheaper than gas stations)!!! Refillable cup for each passenger Bag of change for tolls and tire air machines (not just dollar bills, but some change, too) Roll of paper towels Box of tissues Hand wipes Shout wipes Car charger for each passenger A travel sized or neck pillow is not a bad thing to have along for napping in the passenger seat Likewise a light blanket in case of AC temperature wars A sweater for icy restaurants Mints (or toothbrush and paste: long drives = fuzzy mouth) Make sure you have current registration and insurance cards Flashlight with new batteries towel/blanket for pavement in case you have to change a tire Make sure your spare is filled, not flat Jumper cables if you have them Tire pressure gauge AAA card (if you have one) Remember - apps will always help, especially if you’re interested in stopping at various roadside attractions, or want to wander off the beaten path to explore. So, let me ask you this essential question. How often do you check the pressure of your tires? If you don’t have an answer, well… you’re not alone. Unfortunately!! The thing is that you should have an answer because checking your tires should be a regular part of your maintenance schedule. There are some things that you should absolutely leave to the professionals, but checking your tires is something that you should be doing yourself at home reasonably often. Check out how often you should do it, why you should do it, and learn a little bit more about tires and their lifespans! In all honesty, you should be checking your tires at least once a week. It seems like a lot but it takes about thirty seconds and you don’t need anything besides a tire pressure gauge to do it. Look at the pressure, add air if your tires are a little low, and there you go. How do you know what the pressure in your tires should be? That information is on a sticker located on the inside of your driver’s side door jamb. It’s also in your owner’s manual and might even be on the outside of the physical tires, stamped into the rubber. Checking the tread of your tires is also important. For this, you’ll need a penny. To use it, put the penny into your tire’s tread with Lincoln’s head pointing towards the ground (or center of the tire). If you can see the top of his head, you need new tires very soon. Tires should last for about five years or so, but some factors go into the premature wear of your tires. They are: Low tire pressure Overinflated tires Aggressive driving Improper alignment To combat these, make sure your tires are always inflated (which also improves your MPG’s) and have your auto tech check your tires and rotate them, as well as check the alignment of your vehicle, at every oil change. Out of all the features that come on your vehicle, one of the most important and most often overlooked (as a safety feature) is your headlights! Yeah, seriously. How often do you think about your headlights in the context of them being a safety feature on your vehicle? I am going to guess that the answer is “not very often.” That’s okay! This blog is about how you can take care of your headlights and make sure they’re functioning as well as they need to be. We’ve got your back on this. Don’t worry! So, if your headlights are fully operational but just don’t seem as bright as they should be, or as they used to be, then you should first wash them with a cleaning solution and clean microfiber cloth. If, after you clean your headlights, they still seem dim, take a closer look. If they are scratched, chipped, pitted, or just hazy, ask us about headlight reconditioning! If only one of your headlights is out, then it’s probably due to a burnt out bulb. It could also be a broken component of your headlight assembly… but it’s probably a burnt out bulb. If both of your headlights are out, then you’ve got the opposite problem. Unless they burned out one by one (which, if that’s the case, why didn’t you come in sooner?!) you probably have a broken relay or switch for your headlights that needs to be repaired or replaced. If your headlights work and are bright enough to satisfy you but just happen to go dim in certain situations, such as when you’re accelerating, then you might have a problem with your charging system. Do you have feelings of existential dread, impending doom, or gripping fear when you see your check engine light come on? It shouldn’t be a regular occurrence by any means, but if you’ve ever had that little light show up on your dash then you might know what I’m talking about. Luckily, it’s not the end of the world! The five most common causes of the check engine light coming on are actually not complicated problems, and though they range in cost-to-fix from free to kind of expensive, they’re not mysteries by any means. Check them out below, and then take a deep breath. Gas cap. Your check engine light could have come on simply because your gas cap is either not screwed on tightly enough, broken, or missing entirely. Whenever the check engine light comes on, check your gas cap first. If it’s broken or missing, it can be replaced very inexpensively. Spark plugs. Every 100,000 miles or so, your spark plugs will need to be replaced. The light coming on could simply mean that it’s that time. Mass Airflow Sensor. This component monitors the amount of air coming through your engine so that it can tell the engine how much fuel to use. If it’s broken, your emissions increase and your car can stall. Oxygen sensors. Also known as O2 sensors, these monitor the amount of unburned oxygen in your exhaust, which is a measure of how much fuel is being burned in your engine. When these are broken, your mileage can decrease and you can burn out your catalytic converter. Catalytic Converter. This is unfortunately the worst-case scenario as it is typically the most expensive repair. If your cat is broken or malfunctioning, it won’t reduce your exhaust gases the way it is supposed to, which can decrease your MPGs and affect your acceleration power. Let Us Fix It For Less!

Windshield wipers, the unsung heroes of driving safety. These poor little guys don’t get nearly the credit they are due, but let me tell you. After all the rain the Capital District has gotten these past few weeks, I don’t quite know what I would do without my precious little wiper blades. Me wants them. Me NEEEEEDS them. Alas, they aren’t even considered a safety feature, but, my friend, they do play a big part in drivers’ safety. I wear these big old glasses so vision is questionable for me on a good day, much less a day where the windshield is shrouded in... weather. It’s challenging to drive as safely as you may want to when you can’t even clearly see the road through your windshield. Dirt and grime are really tough on your wipers and can wear them down. In addition, all that buildup can reduce your visibility which can definitely be a hazard. Replace your wipers for a clear view of the road. Do you know when to replace your windshield wipers? Unfortunately, they can’t tell you that they are a bit beat and need to be replaced, well not in so many words at least. The general guideline is every six months or 6,000 miles. With the way mother nature has been acting lately, it may need to be sooner than that. Those poor wipers are really getting a beating. Either way, it’s time to replace your wiper blades if you notice any of the following: Windshield streaking or smearing Screeching or squeaking noises Rubber blades that are split or worn Bent frames When it comes to picking the right wiper blade for your needs, there are a few factors to consider. If one of your wipers gives you trouble, it’s best to replace both for peak performance. This way ½ of your window isn’t left a debris covered mess while the other looks basically polished. You might be thinking, “Gee I only REALLY need to replace the refill (The little rubber-wiping bit) instead of the entire blade”. But honestly, that’s more hassle than it’s worth. Buying the whole thing is only a little bit more expensive and you will be far less frazzled. Another thing to consider is that you need to know the size your car needs. No, wiper blades are not one size fits all. I learned that the hard way. So to save yourself the embarrassment of trying to install wiper blades that were the wrong size. To find the size that you need, you can look in your car’s owner’s manual, measure the blades yourself or ask your friends at Destination Nissan to help you out. Once you know the size, you need to decide on a blade type. Again, I too was shocked that there were options. Here is what you can choose from: Traditional: Most cars use this affordable option. Beam: These higher-cost blades are known for their performance, durability, and aerodynamic design. Winter: These are designed to keep the wiper free of ice and snow. Replacing windshield wipers is fairly simple, but steps vary depending on your vehicle’s type of wiper. Your owner’s manual should walk you through the process. Once you’ve installed the blades, test them right away to ensure they work properly.
