Coolant: keeping your vehicle cool is super important during the summer, not just for us but for your vehicle as well! Making sure the coolant level is correct is super important, this makes sure that your engine doesn’t overheat. Go the extra mile and check the state of the hoses and coolant reservoir, look for leaks or damage. If you find any make sure you get it fixed as soon as possible!

Engine Belts: There is usually a serpentine belt that runs between the alternator, the fan, and several other components. It can deteriorate, become loose, start to squeal, and sometimes just break for no apparent reason. It needs to be in good condition and at the right amount of tension. If you see cracks in the belt or small pieces missing, it’s time to replace the belt.

Wipers: With hot summer days, come those summer storms we love to watch…even if we don’t want to be stuck in the middle of them. Things happen though and when it does you want to make sure your wipers are working properly so you can stay safe through any type of weather.

Other Essential Fluids: Check oil, brake, power-steering and windshield-washer fluids regularly. These liquids never stop being used and consumed. Speaking of brake fluid, how do the brakes on your car feel in general? Are they lacking in a bit? Feeling a bit spongy? If so, new pads and a system bleed might be required.

Air-Conditioning System: A summer essential is your car’s AC! If the system isn’t working properly, check for leaks. If the AC is leaking when on that is not good, there are plenty of sealing products you can use to fix this issue. IF this doesn’t resolve the issue bring your car to a mechanic to be serviced.

Air Filter: The winter’s decomposing leaves may be clogging up drainage points, windshield-washer nozzles or your car’s air filter. Now might be a good time to buy a new one or take the current one out and give it a cleaning.

Tires: Tires really need to be checked all year long. Your tire pressure needs to be correct (check the owner’s manual) in order to work properly and not cause damage to your vehicle. And since summer is the time for road trips you want your tire to be in tip-top shape!

Dashboard Sunshade: For those times when you’re not driving, but the car is still out in the sun, a cover that goes in the windshield will protect the dashboard against ultraviolet rays and help the cabin stay a little cooler. Some even have solar panels to keep the battery charged.

Clean the Car: Now that the sun stays out longer you might catch yourself gazing at the orange orb hanging low in a pinky-blue sky, but if your windshield is dirty you could find this to very dangerous! Even from the inside, that haze will diffuse the light and make things hard to see. That grime has a tendency to build up over a long period, so we don’t really notice it. Things look much sharper after your car has had a good wash, though

Driver and Passengers: Prepare your car for road trips and adventures with passengers. If a scheduled service is coming up, think about getting it done before a long drive. It’s no secret that you’ll be hitting the road a lot this summer, and it’s important to emphasize that your tires need to be in tip-top shape. Why you might ask? Well, even if your vehicle is jam-packed with safety technologies, your vehicle will still not be safe if you’re driving without good tires. Your vehicle’s tires are what bring the vehicle to a stop, what keeps you from slipping and sliding, what grips you to the ground,   without good tire tread, you are putting you and your passengers in danger.

Before you hit the road this summer, it is important to check our tire tread to make sure it is a proper tread level. So what is good tread thickness? Great question! This week’s blog is dedicated to just that, helping you figure out if your tread level is on point or not! Luckily for you, you can figure that out in just one simple step from the comfort of your home! No really, you don’t need to know anything about cars to check your tires, thanks to the penny test! What’s the penny test? Well, we’re glad you asked! Check it out below!

The penny test: Insert a penny right into the tread groove with Lincoln’s head facing upside down in the tread facing toward you. Once the penny is inserted, if you can see the entire head, your tread depth is less than 2/32” and that means you need to replace your tires ASAP.

The quarter test: As we did before, place the quarter upside down into the tread groove with Washington’s head facing toward you. If the tread reaches Washington’s head, you have at least 4/32” of tread remaining, AKA you’re tires are still in good shape and there’s nothing to worry about!

No coins? No problem! Take a look at your tread wear indicator bar that is molded onto the tread of your tires. These bars are found at the bottom of the tread grooves in multiple spots. When these bars are visibly flush with the adjacent ribs, your tire has no more than 2/32” of tread left. This is a visible indication that you need new tires for your vehicle!

You should monitor your tread depth closely once it reaches 4/32 inch deep. If you want to check it yourself, here’s how to assess your tread depth:

• 4/32” or deeper = good
• 3/32” = replace tire soon
• 2/32” or fewer = replace tires now

As we get closer and close to the official start of the summer, you’re getting closer and closer to your summer getaways, but before you hit the road for your trip you should make sure that your vehicle is in tip-top shape to ensure you don’t run into any issues down the road… literally! Buying a vehicle can be stressful, especially if you’ve never done it before. Whether you’re buying a new or pre-owned vehicle, it is important to do your homework before you head to the dealership. They say knowledge is power and that is very true, the more you know about the vehicle you’re interested in the better off you’ll be. But when you’re looking to purchase a pre-owned vehicle it is a good idea to do a little extra homework to make sure the vehicle you are interested in is in good shape. Dealerships will buy used vehicles and fix them up to be like-new, but it is always a good idea to know what skeletons your vehicle has been through before you commit to it. That’s why this week we are helping you out by giving you some helpful questions you should ask before saying yes. 1. Is the car I want on the lot?

What’s the point of wasting time and energy negotiating and falling in love with a car to find out the model, or color you want isn’t even on the lot? And even if they can get it from another dealer it won’t be immediately, and who says they will honor the price you’ve agreed upon with another dealer. Talk about a heartbreaker! An easy way to avoid this problem is to do a little research. Go to the dealership with a couple of cars in mind, when you get there ask to see those cars, and have them check the inventory before you fall in love! And if they don’t have your dream car, keep your head up. There are lots of fish in the sea.  

2. What is the actual cost of the car?

Okay, this one is the obvious question but something important to know, there’s a vehicle’s MSRP (manufacturer suggested retail price) and then there is the amount you have to pay to drive that baby off the lot. Depending on the car, the MSRP can be higher or lower. So again, do some research and come informed! You should also expect to pay sales tax, a state licensing fee, and a documentation fee, which dealers charge for filling out the contract. These fees can vary, so here’s where you ask how much your dealer is asking for!

3. What features don’t work the way they’re supposed to?

It’s not a bad question when shopping for a used car, I mean come on this baby might have already taken a few trips around the block and it might not be as young as it once was. Most of the time if there is an issue it isn’t a deal breaker and is an easy fix, but it’s better to know everything, rather than know nothing.

4. What is the ownership history?

If you ask this question and the dealer doesn’t know much about the vehicle’s history this could be a red flag! Don’t be afraid to ask for the vehicle history report or service records. Remember this will be your car, you don’t want to find any surprises after you’ve already signed your name!

5. What is the mileage on my car?

This is an important question even when buying new cars. What if the car was the “test drive car” or maybe it was traded from another dealership. If you’re buying a new car and the odometer reads over 300 miles ask for a discount!

6. What are my terms of payment?

Deciding whether to lease or buy is only half your battle, you have to then figure out how much you’ll be paying each month. Don’t discuss how much you can pay monthly until you’ve settled on a price of the car. And before you sign a lease, be sure to understand all of the fees and conditions, including what is considered “wear and tear.”
