Check Engine Light On? Never Fear!

Do you have feelings of existential dread, impending doom, or gripping fear when you see your check engine light come on? It shouldn’t be a regular occurrence by any means, but if you’ve ever had that little light show up on your dash then you might know what I’m talking about. Luckily, it’s not the end of the world! The five most common causes of the check engine light coming on are actually not complicated problems, and though they range in cost-to-fix from free to kind of expensive, they’re not mysteries by any means. Check them out below, and then take a deep breath.
-
Gas cap. Your check engine light could have come on simply because your gas cap is either not screwed on tightly enough, broken, or missing entirely. Whenever the check engine light comes on, check your gas cap first. If it’s broken or missing, it can be replaced very inexpensively.
-
Spark plugs. Every 100,000 miles or so, your spark plugs will need to be replaced. The light coming on could simply mean that it’s that time.
-
Mass Airflow Sensor. This component monitors the amount of air coming through your engine so that it can tell the engine how much fuel to use. If it’s broken, your emissions increase and your car can stall.
-
Oxygen sensors. Also known as O2 sensors, these monitor the amount of unburned oxygen in your exhaust, which is a measure of how much fuel is being burned in your engine. When these are broken, your mileage can decrease and you can burn out your catalytic converter.
-
Catalytic Converter. This is unfortunately the worst-case scenario as it is typically the most expensive repair. If your cat is broken or malfunctioning, it won’t reduce your exhaust gases the way it is supposed to, which can decrease your MPGs and affect your acceleration power.
Need Speed? Drive These 3 Nissans
If you have the need for speed, you should consider getting a performance car from Nissan. Currently, the Japanese automaker has several speedy cars that can compete with the some of the fastest production cars in the world. Here are three of them.
Maxima
While it’s competing in the full-size segment, theNissan Maxima is smaller than many of its rivals. This sports sedan uses a 300-hp 3.5-liter V6 engine and a continuously variable transmission. With this combo, it can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds. The car is also one of the better-handling cars in its segment, offering adequate grip and minimal body lean around turns.

The 370Z comes with a 3.7-liter V6 engine that pairs with either a six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic transmission. All trims make 332 hp, except the NISMO, which produces 350 hp. The 370Z can sprint from zero to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds and complete the quarter mile in 13.7 seconds. The base and Touring trims come with an open rear differential, while the others receive a viscous limited-slip differential.
GT-R
Also known as “Godzilla”, theNissan GT-R is one of the fastest production cars ever made. It’s equipped with a 3.8-liter V6 engine that generates 600 hp in the NISMO trim and 565 hp in the other trims. This car can go from zero to 60 mph in an incredible 2.9 seconds and finish a quarter-mile run in just 11 seconds.
Nissan’s performance cars don’t only offer great speed and power; they are also reliable, comfortable, and loaded with advanced features.

Don’t Play THE GAME
Raise your hand if you’ve ever played the game. If you hear the words “The game” and that doesn’t stir in you a guttural reaction, perhaps even vague panic, you have not played the game. The game is very simple. Your car’s fuel indicator light on your dashboard flickers to life by way of a glowing orange E, and thus the game begins. How far can you go before completely and utterly running out of gas? In this game, there really are no winners…just losers and people who were lucky enough to find a gas station. Aside from the sheer humiliation of having to push your vehicle to the side of the road because your little car used up its last fumes of gas during morning traffic, there are a number of reasons to not let your vehicle’s fuel get so low. Here are three reasons why you shouldn’t drive around on empty – or close to it:
1. Wearing out the fuel pump
The gas in your car “acts like a coolant for the electric fuel-pump motor, so when you run very low, this allows the pump to suck in air, which creates heat and can cause the fuel pump to wear prematurely and potentially fail. This may not be an instant problem, but over time it is something that could have a costly, negative outcome, such as a couple hundred dollar repair.
2. Fuel gauge isn’t always accurate
Your fuel gauge is not an exact science. It’s more of a rough estimate of what’s going on in there. For example, E in your car could mean you’ve got 35 miles before you can’t drive anymore or it could mean game over buddy. The reality is, running on low puts you at risk of getting stranded or being in an accident when the car suddenly stops running on the road.
3. Sediment
Sediment from gasoline settles at the bottom of every gas tank. The lower you let your gas levels dip, the more the dirt gets stirred up from the bottom of the tank. This causes your car to use the dirtiest fuel in its tank. You also risk the dirt getting into your car’s fuel line and engine. If the engine clogs up with dirt, the entire fuel engine system will need to be flushed, which could rack up another hundred dollar bill.
So the next time you’re dipping below a quarter of a tank, choose life and fill up your tank. Don’t play the game. Better still, if you’re tired of having to fill up your car so frequently, stop by Destination Nissan and check out our wide selection of fuel-efficient vehicles.
