Every driver is different, but if there’s one thing we can agree on, it’s that potholes are the worst. We’ve all had that dreaded experience of hitting an unexpected pothole and hoping it didn’t cause a flat tire or any additional damage. To some, this experience may seem unavoidable. In fact, there are over 500,000 pothole-related insurance claims every year! However, there are a few things you can do to decrease your chances of coming into contact with one during pothole season. Farmers Insurance details the three most important things you can do to avoid pothole damage. Read their tips below.

  1. Leave More Space: If there is more space between you and the driver ahead of you, you’ll have more time to notice and dodge the pothole they may have just hit.
  2. Slow Down: Decreasing your speed will improve reaction time. If you do somehow still hit the pothole, hitting it at a lower speed won’t cause as much damage.
  3. Look Out For Water: Avoid water on the road, since potholes typically fill with water after rainstorms and they are harder to see and judge how deep they are.
